4 dialogues from Rocky series that helped me become a better leader
‘I stopped thinking the way other people think a long time ago. You gotta think like you think.’ — Rocky Balboa
I’ve been a Rocky fan since childhood. When I was a kid, if someone asked me what I want to become after growing up I used to say ‘Rocky Balboa’. It sounds pretty funny now, but when you are a kid, you think like a kid.
The amazing thing is somehow I managed to live the life of an action hero, just like Rocky. Not literally though, I did not join boxing. But being responsible for running my own business gave me the opportunity to function as an action hero in real life. I got to know how it feels to be always in the middle of everything.
I was handling my own company in my early twenties. And, this was nothing short of a movie for me. I got to be the action hero, who was fighting the villains (problems that were coming in my way to run the business successfully), taking the decisions (and making them right), handling people (just like an action hero does to save them from the evil), and doing a lot more to make sure that things don’t fall through cracks.

Being the action hero of my business helped me realize a few things and gave me amazing leadership lessons. What were those lessons, let us have a look at them -
- It is not about how hard you hit, is about how hard you can get hit
“It is not about how hard you hit, is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much you can take and keep moving forward, that’s how winning is done.”
Leadership is tough, just like being an action hero. Whether it a project going haywire, losing the clients, or losing your best employees to competitors, you face a lot of hits when you run a business. You get to see a lot of tough times, but you have to sail through these tough tides in order to taste the sweet fruit of success.
- Going in one more time when you don’t think you can
“Going in one more time when you don’t think you can. That’s what makes all the difference in your life.”
No matter how hard the hits of life are, you cannot afford to stop as a leader. You’ve got to move on and take your team along as well. Just like an action hero has to make sure that at the end of the day, the villain is killed and everyone crosses the line safely, you need to make sure the work is done at the end of the day.
- Nobody owes nobody nothing
“Nobody owes nobody nothing. You owe yourself.”
Everyone thinks of the benefits and luxuries involved in being a leader. However, seldom do people realize the pressure and the responsibilities this role brings along. Think of it from the point of view of a leader — a team member can, at anytime, give the manager a reason for why things did not work out, a manager can say the team failed to deliver, but ultimately the leader of the business is the one who has to bear it all. There is no luxury for a leader to give an excuse or put the blame on anyone.
- The mind is your best muscle
The mind is your biggest muscle. Big arms can move rocks, but big words can move mountains.
Words have the power to pierce a person’s heart and mind. When you are a leader, the intensity and impact of these words becomes even stronger. This is the reason that as a leader you need to use your words carefully, think logically and act smartly.
A wrong sentence spoken at the wrong moment can demoralize the team. Similarly a wrong decision made can prove to be too costly for the team as well as business. Therefore, you need to train your brain and make the most of this muscle.
