“Being a good leader” is something we all aspire to become. But only a few of us succeed. Now, what I’ve learned about leadership here at ProofHub is that no two leadership journeys are the same.

Every known and about-to-be-known leader has his/her own stories, struggles, and successes. However, the strategy is almost the same i.e. “being who you are”. This is probably why leadership seems so elusive to many.

Being authentic as a leader is difficult. Don’t get me wrong but most leaders out there aren’t even aware of their own leadership style. Now, as someone who has gone through the same experience — and survived, I have got a few suggestions and fair arguments about what makes someone a great leader.

If you think you can be a leader — a great leader — these are some simple and straightforward strategies that I suggest you should try.

#1 Strategy — Get to know yourself

Before you start managing other people and tell them what’s their best version, it is important that you do the work of knowing yours. Be confident enough in who you are and what kind of leader you are to express your true self to others. In simple words, know what you’re best at and how you’re impacting others.

#2 Strategy — Remember, technology is not overrated

Technology and automation have changed the business world for good. However, there are a few among the same world that consider technology to be a bit overrated. Being a leader, be sure that you’re not making the same mistake. Instead, stay in touch with the latest technology and find the best business productivity tools to integrate into your everyday processes. Example, a project management software, a team chat app, a to-do app, an online calendar, a Gantt chart tool, etc.

#3 Strategy — Manage your own motivation and engagement

Staying motivated and engaged is both a practice and a skill. Now, if you want the people you’re leading to stay motivated and engaged, you have to model it. Here are a few things you can do to stay approachable, open and always motivated.

  • Set priorities and make a commitment.
  • Reflect on your progress and strive hard to improve.
  • Talk about your successes, failures, and lessons learned from each experience.
  • When in doubt, speak to the ones you admire.

#4 Strategy — Balance your emotions

Feelings and emotions play a major role in a leader’s life. Sometimes, strong emotions in the workplace often lead you to failure and conflicts. The most successful leaders are the ones who balance their emotions in a way that they make the best possible decisions and dig way for their success.

#5 Strategy — Walk your talk

A person who says one thing and does another can never be a leader. As a leader, what you say and what you do is a matter of great importance. When you’re talking to others about vision, expectations and cultural norms, they expect you to reflect the same via your actions. And that’s obvious. So, make sure that you walk your talk, all the time.

#6 Strategy — Consistently review your behavior around people.

Creating an environment where your people feel safe to bring out the best of their ideas and innovation is an important part of your role as a leader. However, that isn’t possible if you don’t have a clue about how others feel in your presence. And that’s why it is important for you to consistently review (and ask for review) your behaviors around people. Make sure that everyone around you feels accepted and included in your leadership.

Conclusion

The best leaders in the world are known for their own version of leadership. So, don’t hesitate to find or invest yours. The above strategies are here to give you a jump start in the right direction. Put them into practice and you’ll be taking that one step further needed to be a great leader.
